STAIR is a Trauma informed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approach. It is based around re-learning and acquiring skills to help us manage the distress and interpersonal challenges that can come with Trauma.
Sometimes referred to as 'Parts' or 'Internal Family Systems (IFS)' therapy. This is a method that manages internal conflict and seeks to understand our feelings and motivations, especially when they can be problematic. It can be very effective in managing low self-esteem or negative self-talk, unhelpful behaviours, and emotional triggers by identifying and respectfully communicating with those parts of ourselves that are getting in the way of us living the life we aspire to.
EMDR is an acronym for "Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing"
While it no longer relies on eye movement alone (some clients prefer auditory stimuli) it works through the client experiencing a sensory stimulus from alternating sides - e.g. eye movement left and right or a clicking sound in one ear then the other.
This differs from CBT as it focusses more acutely on challenging thought patterns and beliefs that may be limiting the client's emotional well-being
This is a treatment developed to help clients who experience recurring nightmres, often as the result of Trauma. It involves writing down, in the presence of the therapist, the details of the nightmare and discussing ways in which it can be changed to something more positive.
Phobias can be the result of myriad causes. I use a number of techniques within the confines of the therapy room to help clients desensitise their fear and manage their phobia(s) more effectively, without resorting to immediate exposure to the stressor.
