The word 'trauma' has its origins in ancient greek - specifically the word for wound. As in emergency medicine where Trauma is reserved for physical injury that is beyond the body's ability to heal without external intervention, Psychological Trauma refers to an emotional experience so overwhelming that the psyche cannot recover by itself.
PTSD (sometimes called Type 1 or 'Simple' PTSD to differentiate it from Type 2 or 'Complex' PTSD) results from one or more specific, identifiable overwhelming events.
Complex PTSD may result from chronic inescapable threat, where each event may not be as severe as those that result in Type 1 PTSD, but the unrelenting nature of the stressor compounds over time, leading to similar symptoms.
The specific symptoms vary from individual to individual, but they tend to coalesce into a general pattern - acute distress at reminders of the event(s), spontaneous or intrusive thoughts or feelings, emotional disturbance such as low self-esteem, low mood, anxiety or irritability, and unhelpful coping mechanisms.
While I can't offer advice, one option would be to speak to a trauma-informed mental health professional, like me.
I offer a range of evidence-based therapies, including trauma focussed cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), Ego-State Therapy, EMDR amongst others.
